CBAA Projects: 2002-2006

2006 -- New Minutemen Causeway Signs

Minuteman Causeway East ViewHow long has the “Entering Minutemen Causeway” sign been standing there mid-way on Minuteman Causeway to CBHS? We don’t know, but we are researching this and the answer will reveal itself soon!

When was Minutemen Causeway –NOT– Minutemen Causeway? Well, up until 1966 it was Cocoa Blvd. and it took a lot of hard work, petitions and lots of us students showing up at City Hall for the Commission Meetings to get the name changed to Minutemen Causeway!

Scott Hardcastle, retired CBPD Officer, current KSC worker, husband to Teressa, father to Minuteman Causeway West ViewKatie (CBHS Senior) and all around good guy took on this project and with CBAA’s money and full support—voila! The new sign is finished and just awaiting the automatic lighting system for night-time illumination and the CBAA logos (superimposed in picture to the right).

Scott retired from the CBAA Board this past year, and for all of his hard work for CBHS, along with his wife Teressa—they were awarded the Minuteman Awards for 2006. Congratulations to both Scott and Teressa. See full story.

2006 -- CBAA & CBHS Project Graduation at Daytona International Speedway

Project GraduationTHE DAYTONA 500 (9 Days) and The Pepsi 400 (2 Days). The Alumni Association worked with the 2006 Project Graduation folks from CBHS working as volunteers during the 2006 Daytona Speed Weeks in February AND the races in July. We worked in the brand new Nextel Fan Zone—a premier area between the track and the infield—where you can see all the activities up close and personal happening at the track during the races—it was fabulous. We worked concession carts together—as it took 10 to 15 people per day working up to 12 hour days– to accomplish our goal to raise money. Daytona International Speedway uses non-CBAA Volunteers for Project Graduationprofit volunteer groups from all over Florida to work during their racing season and pay them a percentage of products sold. During the 2006 season we raised close to $10,000. The money raised was split between the two groups according to the amount of hours worked by personnel from each group. We wish to thank all those who volunteered during 2006 and are hoping the CBAA can do this again in the future. The CBHS Project Graduation folks are continuing on working the Nextel Fan Zone and raising lots of money for their yearly graduation party. Way to go, Beach Pride! See lots of photos of our hard work in Photos: Events.

2004 -- Beachwalk

The Cocoa Beach Alumni Association and the Cocoa Beach Quarterback Club in association with the Brevard Schools Foundation were sponsors of the Beach Walk at Cocoa Beach High School’s Football Stadium. Beach Walk is a sidewalk from the entrance of CBHS’s Football Stadium to the Home viewing stands. It’s eight feet wide and 313 feet long paved with engraved bricks/pavers. See Beachwalk page for more information and order form.

2002-2005 -- Cape View Cafeteria Sound System

Cape View PlaqueYes, the numbers above are correct. It took us 4 years to raise enough funds to finish our very first project that was approved by the CBAA Board—to replace the aging sound system in the Cafeteria for Cape View Elementary School.

Phase I, initiated by former CBAA president Charley Priddy, was supported by the monies raised from our 2005 40th Anniversary Celebration, support from four corporate sponsors—Science Applications International Corporation, Kelley Logistics Support Systems, Jack Link and Associates, and Porter World Trade, Inc.—and a myriad of past graduates. The final phase was paid for completely by our volunteer work at the Daytona International Speedway.

The new sound system has been installed by Jack Link and Associates and is working beautifully, as reported to us by school Principal, Ms. Sharon Horton. The CBAA has prepared a large wooden plaque that will be placed soon in the Cafeteria. Pictures of this will be posted and we’re hoping for a newspaper article to follow also.

2002 -- New Window for CBHS Football Field Ticket Booth

Ticket BoothThanks to former CBAA President, Charley Priddy, and some other gracious donations made by various Alumni—the ticket booth windows were replaced with extra-thick clear lexan material. The old windows were very scratched and the original ones installed when the field was built. It was time for new ones. They’re clear, clean and look wonderful. Thanks, Charley and others!

2002 -- CBAA ADOPTS MINUTEMEN CAUSEWAY

Adopt-A-ShoreCocoa Beach Alumni Association, Inc. has adopted the Minutemen Causeway through the Keep Brevard Beautiful organization. Because it is a causeway, it is under the "Adopt-A-Shore" program, rather than the Adopt-A-Road program, but the two programs work the same way. Keep Brevard Beautiful provides a sign, coordination with government agencies responsible for the road, sunscreen, tools, training and orientation for the project. The Alumni Association provides the person-power, organizing groups of volunteers to clean up the road side and water's edge along Minutemen Causeway from the end of the residential area, past Roosevelt Elementary School and Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School. Plans are underway for the first cleanup event in the spring of this year, and at least every 3 months thereafter. This is a great opportunity for our alumni and others in the community to be actively involved in a project that will benefit not only the students, faculty and staff who travel Minutemen Causeway to school each day, but the whole community. Service clubs at the school will be invited to join us as volunteers, thus fulfilling their required service hours and having fun while getting to know our alumni group. For further information, or to volunteer, contact Brenda Snider (CBHS 67) Teixeira.

2001 -- CBAA’s 40th Anniversary Celebration of CBHS, 1965 - 2005

The weekend was glorious … beautiful weather, a wonderful Space Coast Art Festival in the streets of Cocoa Beach, our 5th Annual CBAA Alumni Street Party at Bernard’s Surf—attended by hundred’s of alumni in town, as there were several reunions that weekend: Class of 1985, Class of 1975, and Class of 1995— and the culmination of that wonderful weekend was our 40th Anniversary Celebration of CBHS.

The Celebration was held at the Comfort Inn (old Crossway Inn) on A1A, November 26th. We started with cocktails at 6PM, and moved into our entertainment— Chris Miller (local guitarist/entertainer— and buffet quickly thereafter. Chris and the food went from 8PM until 11PM, and the event ended at Midnight. During the evening, there was a “memorabilia corner” with a DVD of CBHS pictures through the years and of Cocoa Beach too! We had a short program opened with the CBHS Fight Song and quick picture presentation and then our Vice President, Mia Hosemann, (standing in for our sick President, Neil Spencer) welcomed everyone to the event. There was also a 50/50 Ticket Raffle, with the winner going home with $200+.

There were Celebration T-Shirts sold both Friday and Saturday nights. The white short-sleeved shirt has our CBAA logo on the front and a wonderful 40-year anniversary design on the back—designed for us by Brigid Tiani, Class of 1969. We have a few of them left—size XL only—and if you’re interested in purchasing one of them for $10—we’ll mail it to you for FREE! Contact our new Prez, Juli Tucker, at julicb68@cfl.rr.com or 321-453-8298 and she’ll take care of that for you. The logos for the CBAA web site and the T-shirt were designed by Linda Bates MacCleave, class of 65.

Hope you enjoy the pictures from our Celebration … and see how many you remember!
