Kelly Slater, Class of 1991
SURFING CHAMPION
Kelly Slater has won an unprecedented 8th World Surfing Title (the most ever), after finishing in 2nd place behind Bobby Martinez in the Billabong Pro Mundaka contest in Spain 2006. He is now tied with Tom Curren for the most contest wins (33). Two World Championship Tour events, in Brazil and Hawaii, still remain. The Cocoa Beach native has made a habit of breaking surfing records since clinching his first World Title in 1992 as the youngest ever champion at 20 years old. He is now also the world’s oldest surfing champion at 34, and the sports first millionaire. He made a rare appearance back in Cocoa Beach at the Inaugural Sean Slater Invitational on October 27-28, 2006 at the Cocoa Beach Holiday Inn.
